At our school, we deliver the NSW curriculum through a diverse range of subjects designed to support each student’s learning journey. We recognise that strong literacy and numeracy skills are fundamental building blocks for both academic success and everyday life. At SMIS, we specialise in Kindergarten to Year 2 education, creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every child’s unique needs are embraced. Extension opportunities

Some students are ready for more challenges. Through open-ended learning experiences and personalised support, we encourage every student to explore their potential and develop a lifelong love of learning. We offer open-ended tasks, enrichment programs and support.

As part of Project Humble, Students have the opportunity to learn about beekeeping and sustainability, and to help sell honey produced through the program. Although the bees are not kept at our school, students are actively involved in learning about the process and the importance of caring for the environment.

We also offer cooking and gardening as part of our Kitchen Garden Initiative with Phoenix Park Farm. Students build practical life skills, learn about healthy living, and deepen their understanding of where food comes from. These hands-on experiences foster teamwork, responsibility, and a strong connection to nature and the land.

Our skilled teachers also run STEM challenge days across the year. This gives students the opportunity to engage in open-ended, interest based, challenging learning tasks which promote problem solving, teamwork, and leadership skills.

High potential and gifted education

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our learning approach

Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.

Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.

ensuring extra assistance for students with personalised plans and support from specialist staff
reporting regularly to parents and carers so they stayed informed about their child's progress

delivering targeted literacy and numeracy support in small groups
integrating wellbeing into daily learning experiences
collaborating with families to support learning at home and school
assisting students, families and carers through transitions, like starting school, Year 3 placements or moving to a new stage of learning.
